Brief Bio of Lisa Lu

Lisa Lu

Ms. Lisa Lu, an internationally renowned actress and producer, began her career in Hollywood, California. Her artistic accomplishments in America and her native China highlight a distinguished career spanning the Pacific.

She's an accomplished performer in film, television and stage and has performed in all of these arenas, in both English and Chinese in the United States, China (including Hong Kong) and Taiwan. Her versatility as a performer has allowed her to work in a variety of styles including modern drama, Chinese opera and Southern Kun Qu.

Ms. Lu has starred in many films, among them are Disney's "The Joy Luck Club," Bernardo Bertolucci's "The Last Emperor," and the Shaw Brothers' film "Empress Dowager." She portrayed a dedicated scientist in the science-fiction thriller "Demon Seed," and a fiery, embittered World War II widow in "The Mountain Road" in which she starred with James Stewart.

During the course of her lustrous career, Ms. Lu has received the following awards:

3 Golden Horse Awards, (Taiwan's equivalent of the Oscar),
Best Actress in "The Arch" (1970)
Best Actress in "The Empress Dowager"(1973)
Best Supporting Actress in "The Fourteen Amazons"(1972).

Outstanding Achievement Award at the Asian Film Festival:
"The Last Tempest."(1975)

The Magnolia Award (China's equivalent of the Tony Award):
"Plaza Suite" (1992)

Ms. Lu has produced and narrated several award winning documentaries in both America and Asia.

Ms. Lu executive produced "The Warrior Lanling," produced and starred in the AFI film "Lotus" and associate produced Peter Bogdonavich's "Saint Jack."

Ms. Lu is an active stage performer, beginning rehearsals mid-March of '99 in the starring role of Lindo for a stage production of "The Joy Luck Club" in the San Francisco Bay area. Past stage work includes lead roles in "The Woman Warrior," "Flower Drum Song," "The World of Suzie Wong," "Teahouse of the August Moon," "Wondering in the Garden, Waking up From a Dream," and the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre production of "The Little Foxes," as well as "Peony Pavilion" a Southern Kun Qu with Yu Zhen-Fei " and "Twice a Bride" a Chinese Opera, which was featured in the 1978 Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Most recently she has starred in the TV special, "Happiness For All", for CCTV which was broadcast on the Chinese New Year's Eve and last year performed in the critically acclaimed "DeLing and The Empress Dowager CiXi" for the Hong Kong Repertory Company.

Arts America Cultural Specialist for translating and staffing in "Plaza Suite" - appointed by United States Information Agency. (1992)

Honorary Advisory Professor at Jiao Tong University Shanghai (1993)

On June 19, 1999, Ms. Lu was honored with a "Lifetime Achievement for the Arts" award for Most Outstanding Asian Artist. Given by the Chinese-American Arts Council the ceremony was held at Alice Theatre in New York's Lincoln Center.

Selected as one of the 100 most outstanding Chinese persons living in North America in the last century, by The Chinese Daily News (World Journal), in their year 2000 special edition.
