From 1941 to 1946, he worked in China as an engineer at the Central Radio Works and Central Broadcasting Administration. From 1948 to 1956, he was a research engineer at RCA Laboratories engaged mostly in early transistor circuit development. In 1956 he joined the Hytron Division of Columbia Broadcasting System where he worked until 1959 as Manager of Semiconductor Applications Laboratory.

From 1959-1969, he was with Westinghouse Electric Corporation doing R and D work on integrated circuits, in various capacities as Advisory Engineer at the Research Development Laboratory, Manager of Advanced Development at the Molecular Electronics Division and Consultant to the System Development Division.

Dr. Lin is the holder of 57 U.S. patents, author and coauthor of 170 technical papers, author of the book ``Integrated Electronics", (Holden Day, 1967), co-author of three other books: (1) ``Selected Semiconductor Circuits Handbook", (John Wiley Sons, 1960); (2) ``Semiconductor Electronics Education Committee Notes 1", (John Wiley Sons, 1963); (3) ``Electronics Designers Handbook", (McGraw Hill, 1977).

His most significant contribution is the invention of the lateral transistor which is used in most linear integrated circuits and digital integrated circuits. His early study of the temperature effects led to the use of diode compensation configuration which is now widely used in transistor amplifiers.

He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers ``for contributions to semiconductor electronics and circuits and pioneering of integrated circuits", and served as the Chairman of its Linear Integrated Circuits Task Group, Associate Editor of the Journal of Solid State Circuits, and Technical Program Committee member and/or session chairman in numerous International Solid State Circuits conferences and International Electron Devices meetings. He is also a member of the Sigma Xi Honor Society and Phi Tau Phi Honor Society. He was the recipient of 1978 J. J. Ebers Award of IEEE Electron Devices Society. In 1990, Dr. Lin was inducted into the Maryland Engineering Innovation Hall. In 2000, he was elected to be a member of the Academia Sinica, Taiwan.

In the academic field, he was a part-time Adjunct Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, Visiting Lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley, and since 1969, has been a Professor at the University of Maryland, and now Professor Emeritus.

He was a guest lecturer for summer courses given at the Chinese Institute of Engineers in Taiwan in 1966 and 1974; at the Universite Catholique de Louvain of Belgium in 1973; at the University of Michigan 1971-1979; at Modern Engineering Technology Symposium, Singapore, 1981; at the Universidad Politechnica de Madrid, 1982; at Resonant Tunneling Device Workshop, Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, 1993. In China, he lectured at the Fudan University, Tsinghua University, Beijing University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xian Jiaotong University, Lishan Microelectronics Institute and Shandong Engineeing University.
